The Election Commission (EC) will hold a by-election in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency within 90 days after the seat fell vacant following Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir taking office as president.
The EC announced the decision on Saturday.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the commission would review the relevant laws and rules before taking the necessary steps.
“As the seat has been declared vacant, we will now take the next steps after reviewing the laws and rules. The by-election will be held within 90 days," he said.
He said the commission would not take much time to arrange the election as local government elections are also approaching.
"We will arrange the by-election quickly," he added.
The seat became vacant after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir assumed office as the new president.
The Parliament Secretariat has already sent a letter to the Election Commission Secretariat regarding the vacancy.
The EC Secretariat will publish a gazette declaring the seat vacant and then begin the process of arranging the by-election.
