Dhaka residents face severe hardship as power outages have increased significantly in both day and night across various parts of the capital.

The situation became dire during the evening peak hours as supply has failed to reach its demand.

Power Grid Bangladesh PLC data showed that load shedding in the Dhaka zone reached 599 MW against a peak demand of 6,489 MW on August 22. A day earlier on August 21, load shedding stood at 214 MW against a demand of 5,635 MW.

Recent scenario showcases that electricity supply in Dhaka has fluctuated. On August 20, the capital recorded 554 MW of load shedding against a peak demand of 6,251 MW, while load shedding reached 640 MW on August 19

On August 18, load shedding in the Dhaka zone stood at 154 MW against a demand of 6,184 MW.
From August 18-22, load shedding reached its highest level on August 19; featuring 640 MW deficit.

Demand rose by 854 MW between August 21 and August 22, causing load shedding to climb from 214 MW to 599 MW within 24 hours.

Power sector officials stated that gas shortages, reduced power plant generation capacity, and supply deficits caused the situation. Limited gas supply to gas-based power plants reduced overall power generation in the national grid; forcing authorities to enforce load shedding to balance supply and demand.

Ongoing gas supply shortages prevented several gas-fired power plants from operating at full capacity, putting heavy pressure on the power distribution network.
