Fake group emailed extortion threats to embassies: DB chief

Threatening emails sent to various foreign embassies in Dhaka demanding extortion are the work of a fake group, said Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam, chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He made the statements in response to questions during a press conference at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road on Sunday (August 23).

The DB chief stated that the perpetrators sent the emails to damage the country's image and embarrass the government. He emphasized that police are investigating the matter with high priority to identify and prosecute those responsible.

"This group operates online. It is a fake group," Shafiqul Islam said regarding the cyber threats. "We brought three to four individuals associated with the bKash numbers provided in the emails in for questioning. However, they knew nothing about the incident and are entirely innocent."

When asked about the number of institutions targeted, the DB chief confirmed that three to four foreign embassies as well as several government offices received the threatening emails.

Addressing the potential motives behind the harassment, he added, "I believe this was done out of personal enmity, to tarnish the image of the country, or to embarrass the government."

Shafiqul Islam confirmed that police have not made formal arrests yet but remain confident about solving the case. "We take every incident seriously and investigate it thoroughly. We are optimistic that we will uncover the truth and bring those involved to justice," he stated.
