Former education minister Dipu Moni told the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday that she no longer wants bail and wants to withdraw her bail petition, saying that the purpose for which she had sought bail no longer exists.

“I have been in custody for two years. My bail petition was filed in April. I do not want bail now. I want to withdraw my bail petition,” Dipu Moni told International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday (August 27).

She was brought before the tribunal in a case filed over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising. The tribunal had scheduled Thursday for hearing her bail petition.

Before the hearing began, Dipu Moni sought permission to speak. After receiving permission, she made the remarks from the dock using the microphone.

Referring to an earlier bail hearing, she said the tribunal had asked what she would do by going home. “I no longer need to go home,” she said.

Dipu Moni said her husband, Tawfiq Newaz, had been bedridden for seven years and had lost his ability to speak. She said she had cared for him during her five years in government office, but after she was forced to leave home, her husband had to remain in an undisclosed place for two years while living under shelter.

She said her husband died on August 18 after being hospitalised about four months earlier as his health deteriorated. She had sought bail to be able to stay by his side during his final days but could not do so.

“I could not be beside my life partner of 39 years during his final days. Now there is no need for me to go home. Whom would I go to now? My children want me to seek bail, but I have no urgency to return home,” she said.

The tribunal expressed sympathy over her situation, saying it was deeply saddened and that there was merit in her application, but it had to consider several other issues before making a decision.

Dipu Moni’s lawyer filed the bail petition on April 26. The tribunal fixed September 17 for the next hearing on her bail petition.

The three-member tribunal is headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, with Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmood and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury as the other members.
