The Champions League draw has given Real Madrid more than just eight opponents. It has handed the Spanish giants a league-phase campaign filled with memories, familiar faces and emotional reunions.

Real Madrid will play eight matches in the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, four at the Santiago Bernabéu and four away from home. Their opponents are Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven, RB Leipzig, LASK, Arsenal, AS Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Athens. The league phase will begin on September 8 and run until January 27, with all 36 teams competing in a single league table.

Among all those fixtures, perhaps none carries more emotional weight than the meeting with Inter Milan.

José Mourinho will come face to face with the club that gave him one of the greatest chapters of his career. Inter was Mourinho’s dream project in his extraordinary 2010 campaign, when he guided the Italian giants to the Champions League title as part of a historic treble. Now, years later, he will return to that story from the opposite touchline with Real Madrid.

The Roma fixture will carry another layer of Mourinho’s past. The Portuguese coach also spent time at Roma, making the meeting with the Italian club another reunion with a significant chapter of his managerial journey.

Then comes Arsenal, a fixture that adds another fascinating dimension to Madrid’s European campaign. It is one of the headline encounters of a demanding league phase, while the trip to AEK Athens will take Madrid into unfamiliar territory in Greece.

The Inter match will also have a personal connection for Madrid through Denzel Dumfries, who arrived at the Bernabéu after spending five seasons with Inter. For the Dutch full-back, facing his former club in a Madrid shirt will turn a familiar stadium and familiar faces into the backdrop for a very different chapter of his career.

PSV Eindhoven, meanwhile, offers another link to Madrid’s present and past, while RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk and the other fixtures add further layers to a campaign that already feels unusually rich in personal stories.

For Real Madrid, however, this Champions League journey will ultimately be about more than nostalgia. Every reunion will last only 90 minutes. The memories will remain, but the objective will be the same as always in Madrid: survive Europe’s toughest nights and keep moving towards the trophy.

And this time, the road to the final carries an especially poetic destination 'the 2027 Champions League' final at Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.

Eight matches. Four nights at home. Four journeys away.

And along the way, a collection of old friends, former clubs and unfinished stories waiting to be revisited.
