Protest held at DU over appointment of dual citizens as Ministers

The Anti-Aggression Movement held a protest programme at Dhaka University on Friday, alleging that the appointment of dual citizens as ministers and state ministers violates the Constitution.
The organisation organised a candle-lighting and sit-in programme at the foot of the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the university campus around 8pm.
The programme was attended by Alamin Atia, member secretary of the Anti-Aggression Movement, along with central members Shakil, Hasib Ibrahim, Mohammad Nur, Shaheen Tanvir and other leaders and activists of the organisation.
In a statement, the organisation said it believes the BNP government's decision to appoint dual citizens as ministers and state ministers violates the principle of “Bangladesh First” as well as the Constitution of Bangladesh.
It demanded that the citizenship status and constitutional eligibility of the individuals concerned be made clear to the public.
The organisation further said Article 56(2) of the Constitution is relevant to the eligibility of individuals appointed as ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers, as it refers to eligibility for election as a member of parliament.
It also pointed to Article 66(2)(c), which concerns acquiring citizenship of a foreign state or acknowledging allegiance to a foreign state as a disqualification for becoming a member of parliament.
In light of these constitutional provisions, the organisation called for clarification of the legality and constitutional eligibility of individuals accused of holding dual citizenship before their appointment as ministers or state ministers.
Leaders of the organisation alleged that during the Awami League government and the subsequent interim government, there had also been controversies over the appointment of individuals with questions surrounding their dual citizenship to important state positions.
They alleged that the current government was repeating similar practices despite the controversies of the past.
The leaders said appointments to key state positions should be made by prioritising the Constitution, national interests and loyalty to the state over partisan considerations.
The protest programme also called for a transparent investigation into the citizenship status and constitutional eligibility of the individuals facing allegations of dual citizenship, along with necessary legal action if any violation is established.
