No fertilizer shortage in the country; problem lies in distribution

There is more fertilizer in the country than the current demand, but there are problems with its distribution, said Water Resources State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad.

He made the remarks at a meeting with government officials and registered chemical fertilizer dealers of the district at the Panchagarh Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium on Saturday afternoon.

He said, “Many of those appointed as fertilizer dealers in the past were followers of a particular political party. Some became dealers through family connections. Many of them are now absconding. Many are also not supplying fertilizer properly. They are trying to create an artificial shortage.

"Our message is clear, no individual or group will be allowed to create mob violence, panic or rumours over fertilizer. The government has decided to appoint fertilizer dealers in every union to ensure proper distribution to farmers. However, the existing dealers will not be removed either.”

He further said small-scale and sharecropping farmers face difficulties buying fertilizer. “They need only a small amount of fertilizer, but they often cannot get it properly. Whether you admit it or not, fertilizer priced at Tk 1,200 has been sold for Tk 1,700-1,800 under the cover of darkness.

I will tell the administration to take strong action so that no one can sell fertilizer even one taka above the government-fixed price. Whatever happens elsewhere, we will not harass farmers in Panchagarh by creating a fertilizer shortage or using tactics to sell fertilizer priced at Tk 1,200 for Tk 1,800 for profit.”

He also urged farmers not to stockpile or use more fertilizer than they actually need.

Among others, District Commissioner Shukria Parvin, Additional Superintendent of Police Farhad Hossain, Deputy Director of the District Department of Agricultural Extension Abdul Matin, District BNP Convener Zahirul Islam Kacchu and Chamber President Sharif Hossain spoke at the meeting, along with officials from the administration, agriculture department and fertilizer dealers.
