A boat carrying around 270 migrants capsized off the northern coast of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean on Sunday, prompting a major search and rescue operation.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Turkish and Cypriot media reported that rescue operations were under way. Murat Senkul, mayor of the Cypriot city of Kyrenia, told CNN Turk that 159 of the 258 people believed to have been on board had been rescued and brought ashore.

According to local news outlet Kybris, the boat was about four miles off the coast when it began taking in water and subsequently capsized.

Ambulances and emergency services were dispatched after authorities received reports of the sinking to assist those rescued from the sea.

The local government said the vessel capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus shortly after leaving port.

The Health Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus said all necessary preparations were being made to rescue the passengers and provide them with medical care.

Authorities were continuing the search and rescue operation.
