Thousands of Israelis took to the streets across the country, including Tel Aviv, to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government just three days ahead of the national election.
The demonstrators gathered at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv on Saturday (October 24), demanding government accountability for its role in the events of October 7, 2023.
The protest was organized by the October Council, a group formed by families of individuals held in Gaza following the October 7 attack. The group has been demanding a state commission of inquiry to investigate the government's security failures and assign responsibility.
Opposition leaders joined the rallies, including Yashar Party leader Gadi Eisenkot and The Democrats leader Yair Golan. Protesters welcomed Eisenkot as a potential candidate for the next prime minister.
Israeli media outlet Haaretz reported that demonstrations took place in Tel Aviv as well as several other locations across the country.
Pre-election opinion polls indicate a tight race between Netanyahu's right-wing bloc and Eisenkot's alliance, though neither coalition is expected to secure an absolute majority in parliament.
While analysts suggest Eisenkot might be less inclined toward military action against Iran, major political parties in Israel hold similar positions on key foreign policy issues, including opposition to a two-state solution.
The October Council continues to push for an independent judicial commission of inquiry into the October 7 failure. However, Netanyahu's government rejected the proposal, offering instead a political commission with half its members appointed by the government and half by opposition lawmakers.
Opposition leaders announced they will not participate in a politician-led panel.
