Gold jewellery robbery: BNP, Chhatra Dal leaders sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Monday sent two BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders to jail in a case filed over the alleged robbery of gold jewellery in the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area.

The accused are Al-Amin Shanto, general secretary of the Airport Thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Md Abdur Rouf, president of the Airport unit of BNP.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order after a one-day police remand of the accused ended. The court fixed Tuesday for hearing their bail petitions.

According to the case statement, 200 grams of gold jewellery brought from Malaysia for a family wedding was allegedly looted near Balaka Bhaban on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on August 28.

The complainant, Md Suman, said he and his friend Rohan Chowdhury were intercepted after getting off a hired microbus. The accused allegedly assaulted them and took away the jewellery while claiming that the victims were involved in Awami League and Chhatra League politics and carrying bombs.

Police arrested the two accused after analysing CCTV footage. A court on August 30 had granted them one day’s remand.

Two other BNP leaders, Airport Thana unit Chhatra Dal president Ripon and Airport ward BNP general secretary Rubel were also named in the case.
