Three sentenced to death in gang rape case in Jamalpur

A court in Jamalpur has sentenced three people, including a union parishad member, to death in a gang rape case in Rashidpur.

The court also sentenced each of them to life imprisonment and fined them Tk 100,000.

Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon. The convicts were present in court.

The convicts are Md Sattar Ali, member of Ward 6 of Rashidpur Union Parishad, Md Abdul Malek and Md Anu.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on October 19, 2004, when the victim was sleeping at her home in Bhatipara area of Rashidpur, Jamalpur Sadar. At around 11:00 PM, the accused woke her, tied her mouth with a gamcha and took her to a bamboo grove beside the house, where they gang-raped her.

The victim later filed a case with the police.

Public Prosecutor Fazlul Haque said the charges were proved beyond doubt after a lengthy hearing and testimony from 10 witnesses. He added that the fine would be collected and paid to the victim as directed by the court.
