BNP leaders, activists gather at airport to welcome Mirza Abbas

A large number of leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gathered at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday evening to welcome BNP Standing Committee member and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Mirza Abbas, who is returning home after receiving medical treatment in Singapore and Malaysia.
Mirza Abbas is returning to Bangladesh after nearly five months abroad. His arrival has drawn party leaders and activists from different parts of the capital to the airport area.
From Wednesday evening, the presence of BNP leaders and activists from various affiliated and associate organisations began increasing around the airport. Many were seen carrying party flags and banners while chanting slogans in support of the veteran BNP leader.
Party activists said they came to the airport spontaneously to welcome their longtime political colleague and demonstrate the party’s unity and organisational strength.
Imam Sharif Babu, a leader of BNP’s Dhaka North City unit, said, “Mirza Abbas is a name deeply connected with our emotions. He was one of the key leaders who stood by the party during difficult times. He is returning home after a long period of medical treatment, and we have come here to welcome him.”
Mamun, a leader of the Turag thana unit of Jubo Dal, said Mirza Abbas is a senior and popular leader of the party.
“We came to the airport spontaneously to welcome him. His return has created renewed enthusiasm among party activists,” he said.
He added, “The presence of so many leaders and activists today is evidence of their love and confidence in Mirza Abbas. We hope that under his leadership, the party’s organisational activities will become stronger.”
According to family members and BNP’s media cell, the flight carrying Mirza Abbas and his wife, Afroza Abbas, departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at around 7:30pm local time on Wednesday after completing his medical treatment in Singapore and Malaysia.
The flight was scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 9pm Bangladesh time.
On March 11, Mirza Abbas suddenly lost consciousness while drinking water during an iftar gathering. As his condition did not improve, he was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka later that night.
His health deteriorated on March 15, prompting him to be taken to Singapore by air ambulance for treatment. After receiving treatment there, he was subsequently taken to Malaysia for further medical care.
Mirza Abbas was elected as a member of parliament from the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election. Besides serving as a member of the BNP Standing Committee, he is also serving as the Prime Minister’s Political Adviser.
