Hollywood actress Kate Beckinsale has opened up about her personal struggles with grief and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), saying that some people can experience a life that feels “like hell” because of the trauma they carry.
In a video posted on Instagram on Wednesday, the 53-year-old actress said she had lost both her mother and stepfather over the past two and a half years. Reflecting on her own experience of grief and emotional trauma, Beckinsale urged people to show greater compassion toward those living with PTSD.
The *Underworld* star said people who have experienced severe violence, fear or other traumatic events may find it extremely difficult to escape those memories. Rather than viewing them as weak, she said, such people should be regarded as “heroes.”
Beckinsale also pointed out that many people become skilled at hiding their pain, making them appear perfectly normal from the outside. As a result, others may fail to recognize that they need understanding and support.
Explaining the impact of PTSD, Beckinsale said some sufferers struggle to sleep because of recurring nightmares, while smells, sounds, thoughts or feelings can suddenly trigger traumatic memories. She described the experience as “really like hell.”
In another video marking National Grief Awareness Day, Beckinsale warned against repeatedly telling people that they are “very strong.” She said there can be a danger in assuming that someone who appears strong does not need kindness or compassion.
She also spoke about people who quietly care for seriously ill loved ones and have to watch them deteriorate over time. Many of these caregivers have no medical training but are nevertheless forced to cope with extremely difficult circumstances, which can also take a heavy emotional toll.
Beckinsale urged people to try to become someone others feel safe around, saying that even a small act of compassion or simply being there for someone can make a significant difference.
The actress has faced profound personal loss in recent years. Her stepfather, Roy Battersby, died in January 2024, while her mother, actress Judy Loe, died of stage-four cancer in July 2025. Following the loss of the two people close to her, Beckinsale has now spoken publicly about her own emotional struggles and called for greater empathy toward others facing grief and trauma.
