29 tons of cement seized from boats bound for Myanmar in Hatiya

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested 12 smugglers and seized nearly 30 tons of cement and two boats during an operation in the Meghna River in Hatiya of Noakhali, while the cement was allegedly being smuggled to Myanmar.

The operation was conducted by Coast Guard Station Hatiya at around 5:30 AM on Saturday (September 5) in the Meghna River of Hatiya.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the matter in the afternoon.

Acting on a tip-off, Coast Guard personnel searched two suspicious boats. During the search, they seized 595 sacks of cement that were being transported for smuggling to Myanmar while evading customs duties and taxes. The seized cement weighed 29,750 kilograms and had an estimated market value of Tk 297,500.

Twelve people were arrested in connection with the smuggling operation, along with the two boats used to transport the goods. Legal proceedings against the detainees and the seized evidence are currently underway.

The Coast Guard official also said that such operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to prevent smuggling.
