Prez lays foundation stone of Thakurgaon University

THAKURGAON, Sept 7: President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday urged political forces to abandon the politics of conflict and revenge, saying the country must move forward through dialogue, mutual understanding and tolerance to protect democracy achieved through immense sacrifice.

He made the remarks after laying the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University in the Jamalpur area of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

He stressed that the country must move forward through dialogue and mutual understanding rather than violence and confrontation, and called for a tolerant political environment across the country.

The President also urged everyone to remain vigilant and conscious so that democracy, achieved through immense sacrifice, is not lost again.

He laid the foundation stone of the university at around noon at the designated site beside the Thakurgaon-Pirganj road in Jamalpur, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of the region.

Referring to the project as part of a commitment made by the Prime Minister, President Alamgir said construction of the university would begin very soon.

He described the ceremony as a joyful occasion for the people of Thakurgaon and the surrounding region, saying the university would expand access to higher education for students in northern Bangladesh.

The visit marked President Alamgir’s first official trip to his home district of Thakurgaon since assuming office. He laid the university’s foundation stone on the second day of his two-day official visit.

The President arrived in Thakurgaon on Sunday afternoon. His helicopter landed at Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium, where he was received with due state protocol. He was later accorded a guard of honour at the Circuit House.

Following the formalities, he visited the graves of his parents, offered prayers and sought eternal peace for their souls.

The President’s visit created a festive atmosphere across Thakurgaon. Major roads, intersections and important public facilities were decorated, while enhanced security measures were put in place along his routes and at scheduled venues.
