Affair dispute suspected in Ashulia triple murder

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a suspect in the triple murder in Jamgora, Ashulia, and said a dispute over an alleged extramarital affair may have led to the killings.

The suspect was arrested following a shadow investigation launched by the Dhaka District PBI after the bodies were recovered from a locked room on September 5.

PBI Sub-Inspector Anisur Rahman Bappi confirmed the arrest on Tuesday afternoon. He said the suspect’s identity and other details could not be disclosed in the interest of the investigation.

“Evidence related to the killings has been recovered. Details of the suspect and the specific motive will be disclosed after the investigation is completed,” he said.

The deceased were identified as Nazma Khatun, 39, daughter of Atiar Rahman of Barapukuria village in Nawabganj, Dinajpur; her husband, Alamgir Kabir, 45; and their newborn baby. Nazma worked at a local garment factory, while Alamgir sold betel leaves and cigarettes.

On the night of September 5, locals noticed a foul smell coming from a locked room on the second floor of Hazrat Ali’s house in Jamgora and called the national emergency service 999. Police later broke open the door and recovered the decomposed bodies.

Nazma’s sister, Shapla Begum, subsequently filed a murder case with Ashulia Police Station. The PBI then began a shadow investigation and eventually arrested the main suspect.

According to information obtained from the suspect, Nazma and Alamgir entered their home after Nazma finished work at a factory on the afternoon of September 1.

Alamgir allegedly called a man suspected of having an extramarital relationship with Nazma to the house. A scuffle then broke out between them, after which the suspect allegedly killed all three and fled after locking the room from outside.

The PBI official said preliminary findings indicated that the killings were linked to an alleged extramarital relationship. According to the investigation, Alamgir had called the suspected lover to the house to confront and warn him about the relationship.

The confrontation allegedly escalated into an argument and physical altercation, during which the three victims were killed.
