BGB seizes smuggled-in goods worth Tk348cr in August

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled-in and contraband goods worth Tk347.81 crore in separate operations across the country’s border areas and elsewhere in August.

The seizures included a huge quantity of narcotics, gold, cosmetics, textiles, mobile phone accessories, timber and other goods, according to a BGB press release issued on Tuesday.

Among the major hauls were 8.554kilogram (kg) of gold, 21,646 pieces of sharees, 5,154 pieces of ready-made garments, 606,241 items of cosmetics and more than 1.04 million fireworks.

BGB also seized 4,711 cubic feet of timber, 104,494kg of coal, 17,130kg of tea leaves, 8,715kg of betel nuts, 56,622kg of cumin, 18,960kg of garlic and 34,057kg of fertiliser.

BGB recovered 418 mobile phone sets, 7,848 displays and 34,111 mobile phone parts, along with nearly 605,000 pieces of medicine.

Other seized goods included chocolates, razor blades, glasses, seeds, sugar, cardamom, shrimp fry, current nets, pesticides, edible and fuel oil and 5.7kg of suspected snake venom.

The BGB also seized 4,593,863 pieces of Yaba pills, 4kg of crystal methamphetamine (ice), 1,371 bottles of phensedyl, 7,636 bottles of foreign liquor, 345 litres of locally made liquor and 1,756 cans of beer.
