Jamalpur OC's WhatsApp account used to seek money

An attempt was made to extort money from people by using the name and official phone number of the officer-in-charge (OC) of Melandaha Police Station in Jamalpur through WhatsApp.
OC ATM Mahmudul Haque filed a general diary (GD) with the police station over the incident. The person who was targeted in the scam also filed a separate GD.
In a warning posted on Facebook on Saturday, the OC urged acquaintances, relatives, well-wishers and colleagues to remain alert.
According to the notice, unidentified people were using his name and government-issued phone number through a WhatsApp account to threaten and intimidate people from different professions and demand money. The OC urged everyone to remain cautious.
Speaking about the matter, ATM Mahmudul Haque said he was surprised when an acquaintance called and informed him about the incident. “I did not ask anyone for money,” he said. He later filed a GD with the police. The WhatsApp account and phone number have since been recovered, he added.
Two people have been preliminarily identified in connection with the incident, and legal action against them is being processed, the OC said. The person who was targeted through messages also filed a GD.
The OC urged people not to respond to any request for money or other messages sent using his identity without first verifying them.
