French senators meet Bangladesh foreign affairs state minister

Three French senators met Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaid Islam in Dhaka on Sunday to discuss strengthening political and parliamentary ties between Bangladesh and France.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the senators’ three-day official visit to Bangladesh.

The delegation comprises Guillaume Chevrollier, Pierre-Alain Roiron and Olivier Henno, who arrived in Dhaka on Saturday night. They are members of the France-Southeast Asia and Bangladesh Senate Friendship Group.

The visit is the first political-level visit from France since the new democratic government took office in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed strengthening political and parliamentary relations, bilateral and multilateral issues, and new areas of cooperation.

The senators are also scheduled to meet parliamentary representatives and discuss ways to further strengthen political and institutional ties between the two countries.

Their programme includes a meeting with National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and discussions with representatives from different levels in Bangladesh.

They will also visit projects linked to French development cooperation, museums and meet French citizens living in Dhaka and representatives of the business community.

French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet and Christian Beck, head of the embassy’s political section, attended the meeting.
