Seven sentenced to death; AL-backed lawyers stage silent protest

A group of pro-Awami League lawyers staged a silent protest at the Supreme Court on Tuesday following the death sentences handed down to seven senior leaders of the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League over crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

The lawyers gathered outside the Advocate Lounge of the Supreme Court Annex Building around 1:30pm. They did not chant slogans, although some were heard saying “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu”.

Earlier, International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced seven senior leaders, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death over crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of 50 per cent of the assets of five of the accused and directed that the proceeds be distributed among those killed and injured during the July uprising.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict shortly after noon. The other members were Justice Md Manzurul Bashid and Justice Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

The six others sentenced to death are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, its General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and its General Secretary Wali Asif Enan.
