Jinnah, Ghulam Azam photos trampled in DU protest

A group of Dhaka University students protested the display of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s photograph at the DUCSU museum by placing photos of Jinnah and Ghulam Azam on the floor and trampling on them on Tuesday.

The students, from the 2025-26 academic session, placed the photographs at the entrance of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and inside its museum around noon.

The protesters said they would not accept giving space at the university to figures they believe opposed the Bangla language and the country’s interests.

Meanwhile, DUCSU lodged a complaint with the university vice-chancellor over the incident. Its representatives also raised the issue with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration).

DUCSU representatives criticised the university administration for allowing Jinnah’s photograph to be displayed, saying the university should be more careful about figures associated with opposition to the Bangla language.

The controversy began on Monday after Jinnah’s photograph was displayed at the DUCSU museum. Later, the photograph was removed and the museum was allegedly vandalised.

Following the incident, the university administration formed three investigation committees to look into DUCSU’s “Teacher Evaluation” website, the “Nirbhik July” memorial and the display of controversial photographs of Jinnah and student leader Abdul Malek at the museum.

The committees have been asked to submit their reports with recommendations within seven working days.
