Malaysia labour market reopening process ongoing: Secretary

The process of reopening Malaysia's labour market for Bangladeshi workers is ongoing, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Md Mokhtar Ahmed said on Wednesday.

Former members of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) submitted a memorandum to the secretary at the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, outlining their demands regarding the recruitment of workers for Malaysia.

According to a ministry press release, the government is working to reopen the Malaysian labour market as a priority through a fully transparent process.

Several ministerial-level meetings have already been held between Bangladesh and Malaysia on the issue. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also raised the matter during bilateral discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar during his first foreign visit, the release said.

Mokhtar said the process of reopening the labour market is currently underway. He urged everyone to remain alert so that middlemen cannot exploit the opportunity.

He said the ministry is taking a strict stance against brokers and fraudulent groups to protect prospective workers.

A mobile court has already sealed the office of Triple A Overseas, imposed a fine and seized three boxes of passports over alleged illegal and fraudulent activities, he said.

The secretary said administrative work is underway to determine the specific process through which workers will be sent to Malaysia.

Accurate and confirmed information will be formally announced by the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment through a notice at the appropriate time, he added.

During the meeting, the former BAIRA representatives placed several demands, including equal opportunities for all legitimate and eligible recruiting agencies, including the 312 listed agencies; ending syndication and monopoly; significantly reducing migration costs; ensuring full transparency in recruitment; opening up all eligible medical centres; and introducing a one-stop service through Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL).

Mokhtar heard the demands and said the reasonable proposals would be given due consideration and placed before the higher authorities for review.
