The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has removed Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner M Tanvir Ahmed from his post, days after a procession by the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations in the area.

A DMP office order signed by Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Wednesday said Tanvir had been attached to DMP headquarters for administrative reasons until further notice. He was instructed to hand over charge to a senior officer.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gulshan Model Police Station OC Md Daud Hossain was also withdrawn and attached to DMP headquarters.

On September 11, Awami League leaders and activists held a procession near KFC on Road 3 in Gulshan. Police said protesters threw cocktails when officers moved to disperse them. Two people were arrested and five cocktails were recovered.

Police have since arrested at least 75 people over the incident.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Tuesday that intelligence information about the procession was available, but police may not have anticipated the gathering at that time.
