Lawyer sent to jail in anti-terrorism case

Advocate Abul Bashar a former executive committee member of Dhaka Bar Association, was sent to jail on Thursday after being handed over to police by locals in Pallabi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order after rejecting his bail petition in an anti-terrorism case filed with Pallabi Police Station.

Bashar was detained by locals in Section-12 of Pallabi around 10:30 PM on Wednesday and handed over to police. He was later shown arrested in the case and produced before the court.

Bashar, who represented himself, claimed that three or four people stopped and assaulted him while he was returning home after buying milk for his 22-month-old child. He said locals rescued him and called 999.

Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki opposed bail, alleging that Bashar had taken part in a procession where anti-government slogans were chanted. He said locals had identified him and handed him over to police.

Bashar denied the allegation and urged the court to verify his mobile phone location and video footage to determine whether he had attended any procession.

According to the case statement, Awami League and its affiliated organisations held a procession near the Pallabi metro rail station on July 31.

Police detained several people while others fled. SI Sohan Molla later filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
