Bangladesh reach Asian Games semi-final without facing a ball

Bangladesh's Asian Games campaign has moved into the medal round without the Tigresses having to face a single delivery.

Their quarter-final against China was abandoned on Thursday after persistent rain left the outfield at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, unfit for play. The match was called off before the toss, ending China's campaign and sending Bangladesh directly into the semi-finals.

It was an unusual start to a knockout campaign. Both teams completed their warm-ups and the weather eventually improved, but the playing area remained too wet to allow the game to begin. With no result possible, the tournament's playing conditions came into effect.

Bangladesh advanced because of their superior international ranking. The Tigresses entered the competition ranked 10th in the ICC Women's T20I rankings, while China were ranked 36th. Under the Asian Games rules, the higher-ranked side progresses when a quarter-final is abandoned without a result.

The decision spared Bangladesh the immediate test of adapting to knockout cricket after a disrupted build-up. Rain had already affected the team's training in the days before the match, limiting preparation ahead of the scheduled opener.

For China, the outcome was particularly harsh. Their return to Asian Games women's cricket ended without the team playing a single ball in the tournament. Their quarter-final against Bangladesh would also have been the first officially recognised T20I between the two sides. They had previously met at the 2010 Asian Games, when Bangladesh won by nine wickets, but that match did not carry international status.

Bangladesh will now have to wait for the result of Friday's quarter-final between India and hosts Japan to learn their semi-final opponent. That match is scheduled for 11am Bangladesh time, with the semi-final set for September 20.

The Tigresses have already collected two silver medals and a bronze in previous Asian Games appearances. Their latest campaign, however, has taken a very different route.

There has been no opening match, no scoreboard and no individual performance to assess yet. The first real test of the tournament will come in the semi-final, when Bangladesh finally steps onto the field with a place in the final at stake.

For now, the team has reached the last four through a combination of ranking and weather-leaving the cricket itself still waiting to begin.
