An explosion at a Syrian army ammunition depot in the Ayash area of western Deir ez-Zor province injured at least four people on Friday (September 18), according to Syrian media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The blast occurred inside a military facility belonging to Syria’s Defence Ministry. A series of subsequent explosions reportedly followed, as ammunition stored at the site continued to detonate.
Four injured people were taken to hospital, while no deaths had been confirmed at the time of reporting. The continuing explosions and flying projectiles reportedly made it difficult for ambulances, firefighters and civil defence teams to reach the site.
Security forces cordoned off the area and blocked roads leading to the depot as emergency teams responded to the incident.
The Syrian Defence Ministry said the cause of the initial explosion was under investigation and authorities were assessing the damage.
