Breastfeeding corners opened at Karnaphuli Bridge, jail

Two breastfeeding corners have been opened in the Karnaphuli Bridge area and in front of Chattogram Central Jail to provide mothers with a safe and private place to breastfeed their children in crowded public areas.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain inaugurated the corners on Saturday. The corners were set up on the initiative of Dakbaksho Foundation with support from Chattogram City Corporation.

At the inauguration, Mayor Shahadat Hossain said breastfeeding corners are needed at important and crowded places in the city.

Many mothers feel uncomfortable breastfeeding their children in public, while suitable and private spaces are often unavailable when they need them, he said.

He said the corner in front of Chattogram Central Jail was particularly necessary as a large number of visitors come there every day. Many mothers wait there for long periods with their children and need a safe and comfortable place, he added.

The mayor said breast milk is particularly important during the first six months of a child's life and plays a vital role in the child's normal growth and development of immunity.

He said steps would be taken to gradually establish breastfeeding corners at other important locations, including the airport, railway station, bus stations and Patenga.

Dakbaksho Foundation founder Ziaul Haque Palash said the need for a breastfeeding corner became clear while the one in front of the central jail was being built.

People involved in the construction told them that many mothers would come there with their children and request a place for a few minutes to breastfeed, he said.

He said the initiative was taken to provide mothers with safe and private spaces at important locations.

He added that 135 mothers used a breastfeeding corner set up in the New Bridge area during its first month of operation.

The foundation plans to expand the service gradually to Patenga, Chattogram Railway Station and other important locations in the city, Palash said.

Foodie Express Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Md Shahnewaz Mannan and other concerned people were present at the programme.
