Italy and Inter legend Sandro Mazzola dies at 83

Italian football has lost one of its greatest players as former Inter Milan and Italy star Sandro Mazzola died at the age of 83 on Saturday, with Inter confirming his death.

Mazzola spent his entire 17-year senior career at Inter, playing for the club from 1961 to 1977. He made 565 appearances and scored 161 goals for the Nerazzurri, according to Inter's records. He won four Serie A titles, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.

Mazzola scored twice in the 1964 European Cup final against Real Madrid as Inter won 3-1 to claim their first European title. He also played a key role in the club's success the following year.

He was equally influential for Italy. Mazzola earned 70 caps and scored 22 goals for the national team. He was part of Italy's European Championship-winning side in 1968 and helped the team reach the 1970 World Cup final.

Football was also a family legacy for Mazzola. His father, Valentino Mazzola, was a Torino legend who died with the entire Torino team in the Superga air disaster in 1949. Sandro was only six years old at the time.

After ending his playing career in 1977, Mazzola remained involved in football. He later served as sporting director at Inter and Torino. He was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

The Italian Football Federation paid tribute to Mazzola, while Inter remembered him as a figure who left a lasting mark on the club and world football.
