Man dies after petrol fire amid family feud in Sutrapur

A Saudi Arabia expatriate has died after suffering severe burns when he allegedly poured petrol on himself and set fire to his room amid a family dispute in Sutrapur of Dhaka.

He died while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery around 11:50 AM on Sunday (September 20).

The deceased was identified as Imon,26, Siddiq Bepari.

Dr Md Sultan Mahmud, a resident surgeon at the institute, confirmed the death. He said Imon had suffered burns to 90% of his body.

The incident occurred around 4:30 PM on Saturday (September 19) in the Shyambazar Chamak Tuli area of Sutrapur. Five people who sustained burn injuries were later taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.

According to family sources, the injured people live next to one another at their ancestral home in the Shyambazar Chamak Tuli area. Rajib works as a mechanic at National Hospital, while Dhulu is an electrician and Tania is an honours student at a women's college in Old Dhaka.

Sonia Akter, wife of Arifur Rahman Dhulu, said, "an argument broke out on Friday between Imon's sister Sultana and Tania over stagnant dirty water in front of their house. After Tania asked Sultana to clean the water, Sultana informed her brother Imon, who was in Saudi Arabia."

Imon returned to Bangladesh the same day, she said.

According to Sonia, on Saturday afternoon, Imon allegedly threatened to kill everyone, saying that he would die and take them with him. He then poured petrol in his room and set it on fire, causing everyone inside the room to suffer burns.

Due to the severity of their injuries, Imon, Tania, Siddiq and Rajib were transferred to the ICU for treatment.
