Two get life term for murder in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Sept 21: A court in Joypurhat on Monday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the murder of housewife Sajeda Islam Saju in the town's Janiar Bagan area in 2022.

The court also fined each convict Tk 20,000, in default, they will serve an additional year in jail.

Judge Hasibul Haque of the Joypurhat Additional Sessions Judge's Court-1 pronounced the verdict around noon.

The convicts are Rabbi Hossain, son of Zahurul Islam of Khanjanpur area in Joypurhat Sadar Upazila, and Abu Sayeed, son of Anisur Rahman.

According to the case documents, Sajeda lived with her young daughter in a rented house in Janiar Bagan. Her husband worked for a private company in Sylhet, leaving Sajeda to live there with their daughter.
Sajeda became acquainted with Abu Sayeed, a computer operator at a local school, through her daughter's studies.

On September 27, 2022, when Sajeda's daughter went to an examination centre to sit for her SSC exam, the accused went to the house and allegedly made an indecent proposal to Sajeda.

When she resisted, the accused allegedly became angry, put tape over her mouth, tied her hands and legs, and strangled her with a scarf before fleeing.

After the examination, her daughter returned home and found her mother's body lying on the floor. Police later recovered the body.

Sajeda's husband, Hafizul Islam, filed a murder case with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station on September 29, 2022.

The court delivered the verdict after a lengthy hearing and recording of witness statements.
