Banned Awami League leader Falu arrested

Police have arrested Shawkat Hossain Falu, a leader of the banned Awami League, in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail in connection with a case filed over an incident during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Falu, a former president and current member of the Awami League’s Gorai Union unit, was arrested around 11AM on Tuesday from Nazirpara area of Gorai Union, police said.

He is the son of Suruj Bepari of Nazirpara village.
The case was filed by Nasima Begum, mother of Himel, who allegedly lost his eyesight in both eyes after being hit by police-fired pellets during clashes on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Gorai on August 4, 2024.
According to the case statement, protesters attacked and vandalised the Gorai Highway Police Station during the anti-discrimination movement. Police used tear gas and shotgun pellets to disperse the protesters, leaving Himel with njuries to both eyes.
Nasima later filed the case at a Tangail court, naming 100 people, including police personnel, journalists and Awami League leaders, while accusing another 400 to 500 unidentified people.
Falu was named as the sixth accused in the case.

Mirzapur police SI Selim Mia said police conducted a raid in Nazirpara based on confidential information and arrested Falu, who was named in the case.
Mirzapur Police Station OC Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the arrest, saying Falu was sent to Tangail jail through the court on Tuesday afternoon.
