Footbridge opened to connect Aftabnagar-Banasree

A newly constructed steel footbridge connecting Banasree and Aftabnagar has been opened to pedestrian traffic to ease commute and reduce local traffic congestion.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan formally inaugurated the bridge on Wednesday night (September 23).

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Shafiqul Islam Khan stated that the bridge was constructed following directives from the Prime Minister to ensure safe movement for residents and students in the area.

He noted that while heavy equipment shipments delayed two larger planned bridges, construction of the steel pedestrian bridge was fast-tracked using local equipment to meet urgent public needs.

The footbridge was constructed under the supervision of the Bangladesh Navy with funding from the DNCC. It forms part of a broader Tk 89.54 crore infrastructure project encompassing three bridges in the area: Bridge 1 near Ideal School, Bridge 2 near Farazy Hospital, and Bridge 3 near Meradia Market.

The administrator added that the remaining two permanent bridges—designed to accommodate heavy vehicular traffic—are under construction with support from the Bangladesh Army and will serve as alternative routes during ongoing MRT project construction.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Asaduzzaman presided over the ceremony, which was attended by Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Rakib Hasan, Chief Waste Management Officer Mohammad Humayun Kabir, and Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes.
