bKash launches ‘bKash Forest’ to drive green initiatives through digital transactions

A new green feature, ‘bKash Forest’, has now been added to bKash, enabling customers to contribute to environmental protection through their everyday digital transactions. Under the initiative, customers can nurture virtual trees through their everyday digital transactions which will be matched with a real tree planted by bKash.
Beyond economic impact, bKash is pioneering the green transformation of the country’s financial sector for the last 15 years. By creating a ‘zero-commute’ financial ecosystem, it significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with commuting, paperwork, waiting in queue, maintaining office, etc.
The push towards a paperless economy, evidenced by digital receipts, paperless loans, contactless payments and over 200 services, aligns perfectly with global net-zero targets. This time, bKash forest initiative has been taken to inspire everyone to contribute directly to environmental protection through tree plantation.
The initiative was inaugurated on Wednesday by planting trees at Chattogram Cantonment. A total of 25,000 trees will be planted in the 24 Infantry Division of Chattogram Cantonment. The trees-from plantation to proper growth- will be maintained by Mission Green Bangladesh, an environmental conservation and climate resilience organization.
Major General Ferdous Hasan Selim, BSP, SUP (Bar), AWC, PSC, GOC, 24 Infantry Division and Area Commander, Chattogram Cantonment, inaugurated the bKash Forest tree plantation and unveiled a plaque. Major General Sheikh Md Monirul Islam (retd), Chief External & Corporate Affairs Officer, bKash and senior officials were also present on the occasion.
This is the first time that a mobile financial app-based initiative for ecological protection has been introduced in the country. Every time a user takes a low-carbon action, such as using paying utility bills, opening DPS, adding money, availing loan, recharging mobile or sending money through bKash app, will earn points called “green points.”
As users accumulate green points, a virtual sapling gradually grows into a tree within their bKash Forest in bKash app. Once the required number of points has been earned and the virtual tree reaches maturity, bKash plants a corresponding tree in the real world.
Users can subsequently view updates about the real tree through the app. In this way, the ‘bKash Forest’ initiative will enable users to make a tangible contribution to the environment through their everyday digital transactions.
