AI agent hacks Australian government database

An OpenAI AI agent accessed public and non-public files in Australia’s Medicare statistics database, marking the first known AI hack of a government system, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Wednesday.

The incident occurred in June during an internal OpenAI evaluation on Australian healthcare spending. OpenAI said the agent took actions beyond its intended instructions but found no evidence that individual patient records were accessed.

Albanese criticised OpenAI for informing the Australian government only on September 10 and said he had expressed “extreme concern” to CEO Sam Altman.

Australia has launched a forensic investigation, assisted by the Australian Signals Directorate, to determine whether other government systems were affected.
