Four Naga civilians killed in Manipur, 41 houses burnt

Four Naga civilians were killed in a shooting near Pilong village in Manipur's Kamjong district, while 41 houses and other structures were reportedly burnt in attacks on three villages in neighbouring Kangpokpi district.

The shooting took place on Thursday near the India-Myanmar border. Police said suspected Myanmar-based Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) militants entered Pilong village and opened fire, killing four civilians.

The victims were identified as Phami Jajo, 43, Ningthem Kashak, 35, Betterson Jajo, 50, and Vareishim Jajo, 67. Phami and Vareishim were father and son, according to Indian Express.

Meanwhile, at least 41 houses, including churches, were reportedly burnt in Makui Chamriupiu, Makui Thanamba and Makui Thebram villages in Kangpokpi district during nearly 12 hours of violence from September 23 to 24.

Local sources said 17 houses were burnt in Makui Chamriupiu, eight in Makui Thanamba and 16 in Makui Thebram. Villagers were forced to flee their homes amid the attacks.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the killings, saying such violence has no place in society and will not be tolerated.

Naga People's Front MLA Awangbou Newmai also condemned the recent violence and called on all communities to shun violence and maintain peace and communal harmony.

Manipur has remained affected by ethnic violence since May 2023, with recurring clashes, arson and displacement reported in several areas.
