Int’l Right to Information Day today

International Right to Information Day 2026 will be observed today (Monday) in Bangladesh, as elsewhere in the world, with countries marking the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI).

The day comes at a time when access to reliable information has become highly important amid the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, social media, deepfakes and online misinformation. The changing information environment has made transparency, verification and public access to authoritative information increasingly important.

This year’s theme, “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age,” highlights the growing connection between access to information and public trust. The United Nations recognises public access to information under Sustainable Development Goal 16.

For Bangladesh, the observance has particular significance because the country enacted the Right to Information Act, 2009, providing citizens with a legal framework to seek information from public authorities.

 Information Commission Bangladesh oversees the implementation of the law. The law was introduced to promote transparency, accountability and informed participation in public affairs.

As Bangladesh observes the Day, the central message is simple: Citizens cannot effectively participate in public affairs or hold institutions accountable without access to reliable information.
