'Proposed Cyber Security Law won’t be used to harass journos'

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has assured that journalists will not face harassment under the proposed Cyber Security Law.

While briefing on cyber security at the Secretariat on Monday, the home minister said the proposed law was not being enacted to target the media or harass journalists, but to maintain social order and address crimes committed through digital platforms.

“The government does not want any journalist to become a victim of misuse of the law,” he said, assuring media professionals that the legislation would not be used against them.

Salahuddin Ahmed said preventing crimes committed through online platforms would be a key objective of the proposed law.

He cited recent incidents, including the killing of school student Oprotim in Cumilla, as examples of crimes linked to digital platforms that the government wants to curb.

The home minister reiterated that the proposed legislation would focus on preventing cyber-related crimes rather than restricting legitimate journalistic activities.
