Apple working on lighter, cheaper Vision Pro headset

Apple is reportedly developing a redesigned Vision Pro headset that could be lighter and more affordable, but the device may not launch before late 2028 or early 2029.
The new headset, being developed under the codename N224, is still in the early stages. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is exploring around four designs, including one that could move some of the computing hardware and battery outside the headset.
Apple is reportedly looking for ways to reduce the device’s weight and price. However, the project remains uncertain and could still be cancelled.
The Vision Pro went on sale in February 2024, with its high price and heavy design making it difficult to appeal to the mass market. The current headset weighs around 800 grammes, depending on the headband, and starts at $3,499 in the US.
Apple is reportedly considering different materials and designs to make the headset lighter. One option involves an external computing unit containing the processor and battery. While this could reduce the headset’s weight, some Apple executives reportedly believe carrying an external device would make the experience less convenient.
Meanwhile, Apple is focusing more heavily on smart glasses, which are reportedly targeted for launch by the end of 2027. The company is also exploring other wearable products, including AirPods with cameras and a screenless wearable band.
If the N224 project survives Apple’s internal reviews, the next Vision headset is unlikely to arrive before late 2028 or early 2029.
