DU to take back Sheikh Mujib Hall’s nameplate

The nameplate bearing ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall’ has been removed from the gate of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall at Dhaka University (DU), with the hall’s original name expected to be restored.

The nameplate was removed at around 2pm on Wednesday. A sign bearing the name ‘Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’ is expected to be reinstalled at the gate.

Hall students’ union Vice-President Md Muslimur Rahman said the union was not informed about the removal.

“We were not informed about the removal. I learned through Facebook that arrangements were being made to erase the name. I received no information from the administration or anywhere else,” he said.

Muslimur said he tried to contact the hall provost by phone but could not reach him.

Asked who was behind the removal, he said it could have been a coordinated initiative by the university administration. 

He also suggested that repeated demands from Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal may have influenced the decision to restore the hall’s official name.
