Special Response Battalion (SRB-1) personnel detained a 38-year-old man alongside two foreign pistols, four magazines, and six rounds of live ammunition during a drive at a residential property in Gazipur Sadar Upazila.
The arrestee was identified as Russel Rana, 38, a resident of Janakur area under Bhawalgarh Union.
Addressing a press conference late Wednesday (September 30) night, SRB-1 Squad Commander Debajit Pal confirmed that a joint team comprising SRB-1 CPSC Gazipur and CPC-1 Uttara, Dhaka conducted the raid on Rana's home on Wednesday afternoon based on actionable intelligence.
During a search of his bedroom, law enforcement officers recovered the foreign-made firearms, magazines, and ammunition.
Law enforcement stated that Rana had been using the illegal firearms to establish regional dominance and extort money from local businesses and institutions, allegedly threatening victims with death if they refused to pay.
SRB-1 has launched an investigation to trace the origin of the weapons and identify potential accomplices. Operations are underway to transfer Rana to Joydebpur Police Station alongside the seized arms, where a case under the Arms Act is being filed.
