A convoy carrying uranium fuel for Unit-1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Rooppur under tight security on Saturday morning.

The convoy, comprising three lorries, departed the airport at around 7:15 AM under the security of the Bangladesh Army. Members of the SRB, police and intelligence agencies were also involved in the security arrangements.

The uranium shipment arrived at the airport from Russia at around 11:30pm on Friday. Officials from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority received the consignment before it was handed over for transportation to Rooppur under army security.

An additional 48 uranium assemblies for Unit-1 and 163 for Unit-2 are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on nine flights between November and December. The shipments will travel from Russia via Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

The aircraft carrying the latest uranium shipment also used Pakistani airspace to reach Bangladesh. Earlier, Pakistan had delayed granting clearance for the use of its airspace.
