The day has no official founder or confirmed origin. Various online accounts trace its emergence to social media between 2012 and 2014, with the observance gradually gaining popularity through posts, photos and hashtags on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X.

There is also no verified explanation for why October 3 was chosen. The date has been associated with a scene from the 2004 film Mean Girls, although there is no evidence that the film was the reason National Boyfriend Day was established on this date.

For many couples, the day serves as a simple reminder to express affection and appreciation through small gestures, such as sending a thoughtful message, sharing a meal, giving a small gift or spending time together.

As an informal social media trend rather than an officially recognised holiday, National Boyfriend Day has no formal rules for observance. People generally mark the occasion by sharing photos with their partners or expressing their feelings through social media posts.
