12kg LPG cylinder up by Tk252

Published : Monday, 5 October, 2026 at 12:00 AM
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) have raised the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder by Tk252 to Tk1,837, while autogas for vehicles will rise from Tk73.09 to Tk84.62 per litre. The new rates took effect after 6pm on Sunday.

BERC attributed the increase to higher international prices, ship freight and the rising cost of diesel used to transport LPG. The market had already been volatile for two weeks, with suppliers reducing supply in anticipation of a price hike. Although the September rate was fixed at Tk1,585, consumers reported paying Tk2,200 to Tk2,500.

A state intelligence report said five companies virtually stopped sales from September 22 after seeing international prices climb to $64 per tonne. They withheld thousands of tonnes of LPG to sell at the revised rate. The report noted that imports stood at 158,000 tonnes in August and 156,000 tonnes in September, leaving no scope for a supply shortage.

In December 2025, the LPG sector witnessed unprecedented turmoil. Although the March rate was Tk1,341, sales were recorded at Tk1,800 to Tk2,000. Exploiting the crisis, importers received a series of concessions: the import limit was raised, taxes were cut and, alongside continued LC credit facilities, freight charges were raised from $108 to $250 per tonne. They were also allowed to open LCs on credit.

Even so, the market remains difficult to control.

LPG prices were first announced on April 12, 2021. It was then stated that the base price would move with Saudi prices. Any change in other commissions, freight, importer, dealer or retailer margins would require a fresh public hearing. Since that announcement, BERC has been announcing LPG prices every month.
