Journalists working at Rajshahi University (RU) have issued a three-point demands following an attack on several campus reporters allegedly involving leaders and activists of the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
The demands were formally announced on Sunday October 4) night from the office of the provost of Shahid President Ziaur Rahman Hall.
The journalists demanded that the university administration file a case against those involved in the attack and ensure the arrest of the accused by noon on Monday.
They also demanded the cancellation of the university enrolment of accused students and the cancellation of the certificates of those who have already completed their studies. Those accused who are not university students should be barred from entering the campus, they said.
The journalists further demanded that the administration publish a press release on the university website by Sunday night confirming the filing of the case and its decision regarding the cancellation of the accused students’ enrolment.
The university administration has assured the journalists that it will file a case over the attack by Monday. Following the assurance, the campus journalists called off their programme for the night.
The attack took place at around 8:30PM on Sunday in front of Shahid President Ziaur Rahman Hall. Several people, including four journalists, were injured.
University unit JCD vice-president Ahsan Habib and several other party activists have been accused of involvement in the attack.
The incident sparked protests among campus journalists, who demanded legal action, arrests and disciplinary measures against those responsible.
