A court in Chapainawabganj has sentenced a schoolteacher to five years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a Class 10 student, along with a fine of Tk5,000, with three more months in jail in default.
The verdict was delivered by Chapainawabganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge and District and Sessions Judge Mainuddin Hira on Monday. Convict Golam Kabir, 35, was present in court when the verdict was announced.
Golam Kabir, son of late Tajemul Haque of Kathaliapara in Chhatrajitpur Union, was a physical education teacher at Chhatrajitpur High School.
According to the case statement, Kabir had allegedly been making inappropriate proposals to a Class 10 student of the school on different occasions. On August 21, 2022, the student asked him for a biology book during school hours, and he asked her to come to the school in the afternoon of August 23.
According to the allegation, when the student went to the school as instructed, Kabir took her to the office of the Teachers-Employees Welfare Trust. He then allegedly closed the doors and windows and attempted to rape her. Local people subsequently detained him and handed him over to police.
The victim's uncle filed a case against Kabir at Shibganj Police Station on the day of the incident. After investigation, Sub-Inspector Abdul Gani submitted a charge sheet against Kabir to the court on September 20, 2022.
The court later recorded statements from 10 witnesses. Following the examination of evidence and hearings, the court sentenced Kabir to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk5,000. He will have to serve an additional three months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
Plaintiff's lawyer M Abdus Salam said the court sentenced the accused after the charge of attempted rape was proved.
