A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced three men to death for killing garment worker Saimon during a robbery in the capital’s Mirpur area, saying the verdict would send a strong message to society against such crimes.
The court also fined each of the three convicts Tk20,000. Another man, Sujon, was sentenced to three years in prison for buying the stolen mobile phone from the victim. He was tried in absentia and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Dhaka’s 13th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zahidul Islam delivered the verdict. The death-row convicts- Md Yusuf, Iqbal Khan and Mehedi Hasan, were present in court and were subsequently sent to jail.
According to the case documents, Saimon, a garment worker from Morelganj in Bagerhat, had received his first monthly salary of Tk10,000 on October 11, 2022. After spending Tk2,000 and buying a pair of trousers, he went out with friends.
While returning home, Saimon and his friend Rabbi were stopped by a group of robbers. The gang allegedly lured them to the Mirpur Buddhijibi Cemetery area on the pretext of identifying a person Saimon had supposedly assaulted.
The attackers then took Saimon away from Rabbi, robbed him of his mobile phone and cash and stabbed him before fleeing. Locals rescued him and took him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Saimon’s father, Shahjahan Sheikh, filed a murder case with Darus Salam Police Station. Police submitted the charge sheet on January 31, 2023, and charges were framed against the accused on August 2 the same year. During the trial, the court recorded statements from 18 witnesses.
The judge observed that a perception had developed in society that perpetrators of such crimes often escape punishment, adding that the sentence in Saimon’s murder case would serve as a message to society.
The convicts have seven days to appeal against the verdict.
