Bangladesh Champions suffered a 37-run defeat to Australia Champions in the World Championship of Legends on Wednesday despite a blistering unbeaten 73 from captain Mahmudullah Riyad.

Chasing 204 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh finished on 166 for six in their 20 overs. Mahmudullah kept the chase alive almost single-handedly, but the target proved beyond Bangladesh after Australia had built a formidable total of 203 for six.

The Bangladesh captain struck eight sixes and two fours in his 35-ball innings, reaching his half-century from only 26 deliveries. His strike rate of 208.57 underlined the force of his late assault, but there was too little support at the other end to keep the chase on course.

Imrul Kayes gave Bangladesh a solid start with 41 from 30 balls, including three fours and three sixes, while Fazle Mahmud contributed 27 from 20 balls. Rony Talukdar made nine from six before Bangladesh's middle order struggled to maintain the required scoring rate.

Australia's total had been built around two major contributions. David Warner struck 66 from 38 balls, hitting seven fours and four sixes, while Callum Ferguson made 63 from 36. Ben Dunk then added an unbeaten 45 from 24 balls to give Australia a strong finish.

Abu Jayed was Bangladesh's most successful bowler, taking three wickets for 46 runs, while Ziaur Rahman claimed two.

Mahmudullah later pointed to Bangladesh's fielding as a key reason for the defeat. He said the team had taken three wickets in the powerplay but failed to capitalise after missing two opportunities.

According to the Bangladesh captain, Australia could have been restricted to below 150 had those chances been taken. Instead, the missed opportunities allowed the Australian batters to regain momentum and push the total beyond 200.

"We overlooked two chances. It might have been a different narrative for the team had we seized those chances," Mahmudullah said.

He nevertheless remained positive about Bangladesh's campaign and stressed the need to improve from the experience.

The defeat leaves Bangladesh still searching for their first win in the tournament. Their next assignment comes against West Indies Champions on Friday, giving them a quick opportunity to respond.

For now, Mahmudullah's explosive 73 stands as the brightest individual performance from Bangladesh in the defeat-but it could not prevent Australia from securing their first victory of the competition.
