GOPALGANJ, Oct 8: Students have a responsibility to the country alongside their studies and must remain alert about all matters, said Gopalganj-1 MP and BNP Joint Organising Secretary for Dhaka Division Md Selimuzzaman Molla.
“Although you are students today, you will be the people who build the country tomorrow. Many of you will decide your future from today. You must develop yourselves as competent individuals so that you can play a role in meeting future challenges,” he said.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the fresher’s reception for students of the 2025-26 academic session of Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) on Wednesday.
Addressing the new students, Selimuzzaman said, “Today is a very joyful day for you as you have entered this university as students.”
He said most students at public universities come from middle-class families, while many children of affluent families go abroad for higher education.
“So, you have to make the best use of every day,” he said.
The MP urged teachers to treat all students as their own children and remain mindful of their responsibilities.
“There will be people with different views on the campus. But you must ensure that the university environment is not disrupted under any circumstances. Work together in unity. If everyone works together, this university will become one of the country’s renowned universities,” he said.
He also said voters in Gopalganj elected BNP candidates to all three parliamentary seats in the 2026 election, which he described as a free and fair election.
“So, we also have many responsibilities towards the people of Gopalganj,” he said.
He noted that the university previously had the capacity to admit more than 3,000 students, but the number has now fallen to around 1,550.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Sohel Hasan chaired the programme.
Gopalganj-2 MP Dr KM Babar, Gopalganj-3 MP and Central President of the Jubo Dal SM Jilani, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Ataur Rahman, Treasurer Dr Md Khasrul Alam, Deputy Commissioner Md Arif-Uz-Zaman, Superintendent of Police Md Habibullah and District Council Administrator Sharif Rafiquzzaman, among others, spoke at the event.
