A sparkling knock from opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim set the foundation for a strong start as Bangladesh reached 134 for 1 at lunch on the opening day of the landmark Test against Afghanistan at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Tanzid Tamim, who scored his maiden Test century during Bangladesh's historic victory over Australia, looked set for another quickfire milestone before falling for 83 off 71 balls. His aggressive innings featured eight boundaries and four towering sixes, threatening the record for Bangladesh's fastest Test century, jointly held by Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar at 94 balls.
The left-handed opener was caught behind by the wicketkeeper off medium-pacer Ismat Alam, bringing an end to a 124-run opening stand.
Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat first in what marks the team's first Test match at a neutral venue. The playing XI features three spinners—Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz—alongside pace duo Hasan Mahmud and Ebadot Hossain.
While Tanjid attacked the Afghan bowling attack from the onset, fellow opener Shadman Islam endured a shaky start. Shadman received a reprieve early in his innings on 5 when Hashmatullah Shahidi dropped a straightforward chance at short leg.
Shadman held firm through the remainder of the morning, reaching an unbeaten 41 alongside Mominul Haque on 5 not out as players headed to the pavilion for the lunch break.
