Foreign Affairs State Minister Humaiun Kobir has said that Bangladesh is ready to provide any assistance Saudi Arabia may seek to protect the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah if they come under attack.
''There is no difference of opinion in Bangladesh regarding the security of Mecca and Madinah,” he said at a seminar at the Foreign Service Academy on Saturday (October 10).
The state minister said investment should form the foundation of bilateral relations, adding that Bangladesh had ensured transparency and good governance to attract Saudi investment.
He identified the labour market as another key priority in relations with Riyadh, saying Bangladesh was keen to send skilled workers to Saudi Arabia.
Humaiun Kobir said the partnership between the two countries should be built on mutual trust and confidence. Bangladesh did not want to remain dependent on other countries but sought to become an investment partner, he added.
He also said the government would consider joining efforts in Mecca if there were an opportunity to contribute to peacekeeping.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Japan on a four-day trip from October 26. Investment and energy cooperation are expected to feature prominently in discussions during the visit, the state minister said.
